Description
Carved by David Curtis, this 70mm niho is shaped from beautiful flower jade, displaying vibrant greens alongside soft white and subtle golden-orange tones that give the stone its distinctive character. Polished to a high finish, the colours and patterns are brought vividly to life.
The pendant is suspended from a simple drop hole, allowing the carving itself to take centre stage. Running through the middle is a striking carved feature, with two large negative spaces linked by a central groove that continues seamlessly from the front to the back. This interplay of light, shadow, and flowing lines creates a design that is both balanced and eye-catching from every angle.
Inspired by the niho, or tooth, this form carries enduring meanings of strength, courage, protection, and resilience. It is often associated with the power and determination needed to overcome challenges, while also reflecting the guardianship and respect for the natural world embodied by taniwha within Māori tradition.
With its vibrant colours, sculptural design, and meaningful symbolism, this flower jade niho is a taonga that combines traditional inspiration with contemporary craftsmanship.
