Description
Carved by David Curtis, this 70mm manaia offers a contemporary interpretation of one of the most recognised forms in Māori carving. Inspired by a modern artistic style, the design moves away from flowing curves in favour of bold geometry, with crisp edges, flat planes, and strong angular forms that give the pendant a distinctive architectural presence.
Suspended on a black cord, the clean, understated presentation complements the carving and allows its sculptural form to stand out. Every surface has been carefully finished to highlight the contrast between light and shadow as the pendant is viewed from different angles.
The manaia is traditionally regarded as a spiritual guardian, representing protection, balance, and the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Often worn as a symbol of guidance and safe passage, it serves as a reminder of the unseen forces that watch over us throughout life’s journey.
Blending traditional meaning with a fresh contemporary aesthetic, this manaia is a unique taonga that honours the past while embracing modern design.
