Description
This niho is carved from ōnewa (basalt) sourced from Akaroa, a stone with deep connections to the whenua and the volcanic history of the area. At 60mm long, it has a strong, compact presence and a weight that suits the meaning carried by the niho form.
The stone is very dark, almost black, with small natural inclusions running through it. These details reveal themselves slowly and give the niho real depth and character when viewed up close. I’ve used a hidden hole for the cord, so the lashing drops in behind the taonga and leaves the front face clean, whole, and uninterrupted.
The niho shape symbolises strength, resilience, and the ability to endure pressure. Traditionally associated with protection and inner resolve, it reflects the toughness of the stone itself. The black full-braid cord reinforces this kaupapa and keeps the focus firmly on the stone and where it comes from.
This is a grounded, understated taonga that carries its meaning quietly but confidently.
