Description

This niho taonga is carved from agatised petrified wood, where the original timber has been fully replaced by silica over immense time. The result is a stone that behaves like quartz or chalcedony, while still holding the story and structure of the tree it once was.

One face of the niho has been shaped into a smooth, flowing curve and polished to a mirror finish. Within this surface are rich layers of dark and light browns, moving through to pale, almost clear white areas of translucent chalcedony. These colours reflect the slow mineralisation process, where silica moved through the wood and settled over time.

The opposite face has been left largely natural. Here, the outer edge of the tree remains visible, preserving the texture and grain of the original bark. This natural surface contrasts strongly with the polished face, clearly showing what wood has become through its transformation into stone.

The niho form traditionally symbolises strength, protection, and resilience. It speaks to endurance, standing firm through challenge, and the ability to protect what is important. Combined with agatised petrified wood, the niho carries an added layer of meaning — patience, grounding, and transformation over long periods of time. This is a taonga that reflects inner strength shaped slowly rather than forced.

The piece is finished with a three-hole ring bolt lashing across the top, keeping the front face clean and allowing the form and material to speak clearly. It measures 40mm long and is intended as a strong, understated taonga that sits comfortably close to the body.
