Taku Niho
There are few things as beautiful and meaningful as a piece of carved Niho Pounamu. This precious stone, known as New Zealand Greenstone or Jade, is renowned for its deep spiritual significance to the Māori people. Recently, I had the honor of creating a unique Niho Pounamu pendant for a special individual, a piece that not only holds cultural and historical significance but is also deeply personal, bearing two notches symbolizing the recipient’s two beloved daughters.
Pounamu, or New Zealand Jade, is much more than a beautiful, lustrous stone. It is a taonga (treasure) that holds great mana (prestige or power) in Māori culture. Pounamu is highly valued for its strength, durability, and beauty. It is said to carry a spiritual essence, and owning or gifting a piece of Pounamu is a deep expression of respect and friendship. This makes it a perfect medium to convey personal sentiments, as is the case with our uniquely carved Niho Pounamu.
The Niho, or tooth, is one of the traditional designs in Māori carving. It carries a multitude of meanings, from strength and determination to wisdom and knowledge. This symbol is often associated with animals that are respected for their tenacity and resilience, like the shark or the whale. Thus, a Niho Pounamu can serve as a talisman, offering protection and guidance.
For the pendant I’ve carved, the Niho design is even more special. The two notches intricately carved into the Niho represent the recipient’s two daughters, turning this piece into a symbol of enduring familial love and devotion. It is a testament to the bond between a parent and their children, encapsulating the strength, wisdom, and protection they provide.
In conclusion, this Niho Pounamu is more than a piece of jewelry. It is a symbol of love, strength, and resilience. It is a story in stone, a testament to the power of family, and a reminder of the deep cultural roots and values that connect us all. I am truly honored to have been part of its creation, and I am certain that it will be treasured by its recipient for years to come.
