Te Taurite – A Pekapeka Kaitiaki

I have named this taonga Te Taurite, meaning balance or equilibrium. This name was chosen because balance holds particular importance for the woman who will wear it, and it reflects one of the central meanings carried by the pekapeka form.

This is a small and elegant pekapeka, measuring approximately 40 millimetres across. It was carved from deep, dark green kawakawa Pounamu, with several lighter markings that look almost like small flowers within the stone. Its compact size and simple curves give it a delicate appearance while still retaining the strength and symmetry of the traditional form.

The design features two manaia heads facing outwards, one on each side. Manaia are often associated with protection and guardianship. Placed together in this balanced arrangement, they represent protection from both sides and the balance between different parts of life.

The pekapeka is traditionally recognised by its symmetrical, wing-like shape. It can represent balance, connection and protection, with the two sides working together as part of one complete form. They were drawn to the simplicity of the Pekapeka Kaitiaki design and felt that a smaller, less-wide version would better suit her female loved one.

Pounamu carries its own connection to whenua, whakapapa and the people who give and receive it. Over time, a gifted taonga takes on further meaning through the experiences and relationships of its wearer. This piece is suspended from a black braided cord, keeping the focus on its clean shape and the natural character of the kawakawa stone.

I enjoyed creating Te Taurite as a smaller and more delicate interpretation of the pekapeka. Its symmetry, compact form and protective manaia make it a personal reminder of balance and the support that surrounds its wearer.
