Description
Kōuma are breastplate-style taonga traditionally worn close against the chest, carrying strong connections to protection, resilience, and inner strength. Resting near the heart, they symbolise the ability to stand firm through challenges while remaining connected to personal values, whānau, and whakapapa. The broad, low crescent shape of this piece gives it a calm and grounded presence, designed to sit naturally across the chest rather than hanging long and narrow like other taonga forms.
This piece measures 85mm wide and 40mm high, creating a wide sweeping profile with gentle curves and a shield-like form. The proportions give it a solid visual weight while still feeling refined and wearable.
The taonga is carved from Whakatu Pounamu from the Tasman region of Te Wai Pounamu. Stone from this area is known for its varied mineral composition and highly distinctive character. This particular piece is an extremely pale green, almost mist-like in places, with dramatic dark dendrites, streaks, and spotted inclusions running throughout the stone. The contrast between the soft base colour and the branching darker markings creates a natural sense of movement and depth across the surface.
The seven-hole ring bolt lashing in black cord complements the darker natural markings within the Pounamu while providing a strong traditional suspension. The broad curved surface allows the unique patterning of the stone to remain the focus, highlighting the individuality that makes this piece completely one of a kind.
This taonga carries a strong physical and symbolic presence, shaped both by the natural qualities of the stone and the kaupapa behind the Kōuma form itself.
