Description
Niho Mako, meaning “Shark Tooth”, is a realistic representation of a tiger shark tooth carved by David Curtis from beautiful dark kawakawa pounamu. The rich green body of the stone is contrasted by a lighter natural rind that has been carefully textured to reflect the root of a real shark tooth, making the most of the natural colour variations within the pounamu.
At approximately 40 mm high and 60 mm wide, this taonga has a bold presence. The finely carved serrated edges are clean, even and crisp, demonstrating both the strength of the stone and the precision of the carving. When held to the light, the kawakawa pounamu reveals a rich glow that brings the stone to life.
The tiger shark is respected throughout the Pacific as a symbol of strength, resilience and confidence. A shark tooth taonga represents protection, courage and a connection to the ocean, making it a meaningful piece for those drawn to the sea and the qualities it represents.
The taonga is suspended on a tan three-plait cord and is ready to wear.
