Description

Carved by David Curtis from deep green kawakawa pounamu, Te Koru o te Niho brings together two enduring Māori design traditions in a single flowing form. Measuring 60 mm long and suspended from a hidden hole, the uninterrupted outline allows the carving to speak for itself, while the finely carved detail along the inner edge leads gracefully into a koru.

The niho, inspired by the tooth of the taniwha, symbolises strength, courage, protection, and determination. It represents the confidence to face adversity and the resilience to overcome whatever lies ahead.

The koru introduces another layer of meaning. Representing new beginnings, personal growth, renewal, and the continuous unfolding of life, it reminds us that true strength is not only found in endurance but also in our willingness to learn, adapt, and grow.

Together, these forms create a taonga that speaks of resilience with purpose—meeting life’s challenges with courage while continuing to move forward with wisdom and hope. The rich kawakawa pounamu displays a beautiful depth of colour that comes alive in the light, making this a meaningful piece for everyday wear or as a gift to mark a new chapter in someone’s journey.
