Description

Carved by David Curtis, Te Ara OraThe Path of Life—is a 55mm tuna porohita that celebrates both the beauty of kawakawa pounamu and the enduring symbolism of the tuna’s journey. Rich dark green stone is complemented by a natural band of warm golden-orange from the edge of the original boulder, thoughtfully preserved along one side of the pendant. A high polish reveals the depth of the stone, while the thinner sections glow beautifully when held to the light.

Every surface has been carefully considered. The tuna curves gracefully around the circular form, with flowing fins inspired by the koru adding movement and balance to the design. Finely carved gills, pāua eyes on both sides, and full carving front and back reward close inspection from every angle. The suspension is concealed within the top of the pendant, allowing the uninterrupted outline of the porohita to remain intact.

The name Te Ara Ora reflects the symbolism carried within the carving. The porohita represents wholeness, unity, and the continuous cycle of life, while the tuna is admired for its resilience, adaptability, and determination as it journeys through rivers and waterways. Together they remind us that life is not a straight path but a continual journey of growth, learning, and perseverance through changing seasons.

With its exceptional attention to detail, balanced design, and meaningful symbolism, Te Ara Ora is a taonga created to be treasured for generations.
