Scroll Niho – Strength Written Through Time
$520.00
Carved by David Curtis, this distinctive niho transforms a familiar form into something entirely its own. The upper edge appears to fold gracefully over itself like a rolled scroll, blending crisp edges with smooth flowing curves that showcase both the strength and fluidity of the stone. Finished with a horizontal suspension hole and tapering to a refined point, this taonga represents strength, courage, determination, and the continual shaping of one’s own path.

Description
Carved by David Curtis, The Scroll Niho is a contemporary interpretation of the niho, expressing both artistic creativity and exceptional craftsmanship. The carving features a striking folded form across the top, creating the illusion that the pounamu has been gently rolled over itself like a scroll or a sheet of finely worked metal. It is a remarkable display of skill, combining crisp, defined edges with soft, flowing surfaces that give the stone a sense of movement and lightness.
The pendant is suspended from a horizontal hole concealed beneath the folded upper edge, allowing the design to remain clean and uninterrupted. From there, the carving narrows with graceful lines to a refined point, creating a balanced form that feels both elegant and purposeful.
Inspired by the niho of the taniwha, the carving carries the traditional symbolism of strength, courage, resilience, and protection. The scroll-like form introduces another layer of meaning, evoking the passing on of stories, knowledge, and wisdom from one generation to the next. Together these elements speak of a person who is strong enough to protect what matters while remaining open to learning and growth throughout life.
This taonga honours the natural beauty of pounamu while expressing David Curtis’ distinctive carving style through bold geometry and flowing organic lines. It is a meaningful piece for someone who values craftsmanship, resilience, lifelong learning, and the confidence to forge their own path.
