Description
This taonga carries the name Pīpīwharauroa, inspired by the shimmering effect that runs through the stone, much like the glimmering movement of the shining cuckoo in the sunlight. The Roimata form symbolises healing, compassion, and the release of emotion. It represents tears shed for the past and strength gained for the future, making it a meaningful expression of care and connection.
This piece is carved from an extraordinary type of Tangiwai Pounamu from the Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) region. While not the classic glassy Tangiwai many people recognise, this stone is something far more unique. The internal fibres run in aligned patterns, creating a natural chatoyancy that shifts and shimmers as the pendant moves. Soft whites and very pale greens flow through the stone, giving it a calm, subtle beauty.
The shape is a free-form Roimata with gentle curves guiding the eye to a striking, pointed base. It feels balanced, smooth in the hand, and full of character. This is a taonga for someone who values authenticity, healing, and the quiet strength that comes from carrying meaningful stone close to the heart.
A special piece of Tangiwai, and a one-of-a-kind Roimata.
