Description

Te Niho Mārie carries the meaning of the Niho Taniwha — the tooth of the taniwha. In traditional symbolism, this form represents courage, protection, and the inner strength required to face difficult moments in life. The taniwha is often understood as a powerful guardian spirit connected to rivers, landscapes, and the unseen forces that shape our world. Wearing a Niho Taniwha acknowledges that strength does not always come through force alone, but through resilience, calmness, and the ability to endure.

The name Te Niho Mārie can be understood as “the calm or peaceful tooth.” It reflects the idea that true strength often sits beneath the surface. Like a taniwha moving quietly beneath the water, this taonga symbolises steady inner power and quiet confidence when navigating life’s challenges.

This piece is carved from beautiful pale green Inanga Pounamu, known for its soft colour and gentle translucency. When held up to the light the stone glows with a subtle depth, revealing the natural beauty within the Pounamu.

The taonga is 40mm long and retains the natural skin of the original cobble on the back, connecting the finished carving directly to the river stone it came from. A hidden suspension hole keeps both the front and back clean and uninterrupted by visible cord entry points. It is completed with a three-plait lashing in white honey cord, allowing the form of the Niho Taniwha to remain the clear focus of the piece.

Each taonga like this carries the story of the stone, the river it came from, and the meaning that the wearer brings to it.
