Description
The niho, or tooth, carries deep significance in MÄori culture. Traditionally representing strength, protection, and courage, it also symbolises the connection between the physical and spiritual realms, linking the wearer to both ancestral lines and the natural world. Worn close, a niho serves as a guardian and a reminder of inner resilience.
Niho Roa, carved by David Curtis, means “long tooth.” At 80mm long, it has a narrow, pointed form with a beautiful ridge running down both sides, enhancing its tactile presence. The stone shows glowing pale greens that shift toward deeper mid-greens at the pointed end, giving the piece a sense of vitality and flow. A three-hole ring bolt lashing at the top with a tan cord secures the piece, grounding it with balance and strength.
This taonga is both a protector and a companion â a piece of Pounamu that embodies the enduring power of the niho while carrying its own unique glow and form.
