Description

This is a set of Niho carved from rich Raukāraka Pounamu, sourced from the Marsden region. The stone is known for its vibrant mix of greens and soft golden tones, almost glowing when held to the light. The two taonga measure 60mm and 55mm respectively, each shaped with care to honour the form of the Niho – the tooth, symbolising strength, protection, and connection to ancestral knowledge. Both are made from the same slice of Pounamu, ensuring they share not only form, but whakapapa.

Embedded in both pieces is a single inlaid pāua eye, shimmering with iridescence. This eye represents more than vision. It speaks of awareness, the ability to see beyond the surface, and to navigate both the seen and unseen worlds.

In the context of Te Ao Māori, the pāua eye acknowledges the connection between the spiritual and physical realms. It is a sign of watching, of knowing, and of relating deeply to people, place, and story. These two Niho were designed to be worn by two people who share a significant connection – perhaps whānau, close friends, or partners. The symmetry of the set and the shared Pounamu reflects a unity and bond that spans time and space. Whether worn near or far, each piece carries the story of the other.
