Description

This Niho is carved from rich Marsden Raukāraka Pounamu, a stone known for its striking blend of green and gold tones. Its form takes inspiration from the bird’s wing – one of nature’s most graceful and efficient designs. The shape draws gently outward and upward, flowing like a wing in motion, refined yet powerful.

In Te Ao Māori, the Niho often symbolises strength, protection, and connection to ancestry. This piece retains that grounding mana but brings a softness and movement that sets it apart. It honours the bird as a kaitiaki, a messenger, and a traveller between realms. This taonga is not only visually compelling – it’s deeply tactile. The wing-like contours make it a piece that begs to be held, turned, and worn close.

This is a carving for someone drawn to nature’s elegance and movement. For someone who finds strength in stillness and flight, and who seeks connection through touch and form. A taonga that carries grace, spirit, and presence in equal measure.

The name Te Parirau means “The Wing.” It reflects both the inspiration behind the form and the kaupapa of graceful strength in motion.
