Description

Te Aronga Mārō is a Hei Matau that holds to its origins while standing firmly in a contemporary form. Carved by David Curtis, this piece moves away from the flowing curves often seen in traditional matau, instead embracing structure, line, and defined shape.

At 75mm long, the form is angular and deliberate. Each edge and plane has been shaped with intent, creating a series of recessed bevels that run along both sides. These carved ledges catch light and shadow, giving the taonga a quiet depth. It feels considered, almost architectural, reflecting David’s background and the way he approaches form through both hand and eye.

The Kawakawa Pounamu carries a deep, steady green — a tone that sits close to the whenua. There is a weight to it, not just physically, but in how it presents. The black cord lashing holds the piece simply, allowing the stone and its shape to speak without distraction.

As a Hei Matau, it carries the enduring meanings of provision, safe passage, and connection to Tangaroa. In this form, those ideas shift slightly. This is not a piece about drifting or being carried — it speaks more to choosing a path and holding to it. The sharp lines and defined edges reflect clarity, resolve, and a willingness to move forward with purpose.

The recessed bevels suggest layers — of experience, of thought, of the unseen shaping the seen. It is a taonga that feels grounded, steady, and intentional. Something to wear as a reminder that direction is not always found — sometimes it is made.

Carved by David Curtis, this piece carries a quiet strength. Formed slowly, shaped by hand, and finished with care, it reflects a way of working that stays close to the land, to process, and to meaning.
