Description
Te Kaitiaki means “The Guardian,” a fitting name for this beautifully carved Manaia. Traditionally, the Manaia is regarded as a spiritual guardian, offering protection, guidance, and a connection between the earthly and spiritual realms. It is a symbol of watchfulness, strength, and the responsibility to care for those around us.
Carved by David Curtis, this taonga measures 90 mm in length and follows the graceful proportions of a roimata. Two flowing spiral forms come together to create the eye and sweeping beak, giving the pendant a sense of movement while maintaining the distinctive profile of a bird’s head. The carving is exceptionally detailed throughout, rewarding closer inspection with its fine lines and carefully shaped forms.
The pounamu reveals a beautiful glow when held to the light, bringing depth and life to the carving. A traditional three-hole ring bolt lashing in tan cord complements the pendant without distracting from the intricate craftsmanship.
This is a one-of-a-kind taonga that honours the enduring symbolism of the Manaia, representing protection, wisdom, guidance, and the strength to watch over those who matter most.
