Kiripaka Toki Roimata Taonga
$190.00
This delicate 65mm taonga is carved from Kiripaka (Silcrete), a stone traditionally used by Māori in Aotearoa for tools and cutting implements before European arrival. The narrow form combines elements of both the Toki and Roimata, bringing together the symbolism of strength, determination, healing, and reflection. The stone carries soft grey colouring with subtle orangey tones through it and is finished with a tan Roimata-style lashing at the top.

Description
This taonga is carved from Kiripaka, also known as Silcrete, a hard stone material traditionally used throughout Aotearoa by Māori for practical tools and cutting edges. Working with Kiripaka carries a strong connection to earlier ways of making and using natural resources from the whenua, giving the piece a grounded and ancient feeling.
The form blends the symbolism of both the Toki and the Roimata. The narrow body and small cutting edge at the base reference the Toki, a shape associated with strength, resilience, focus, and determination. The long flowing proportions and softer lines also carry the influence of the Roimata, a form connected with healing, reflection, and emotional balance. Together, the two shapes create a taonga that feels both strong and calm.
The stone itself is mostly grey with soft orangey tones running subtly through the surface, giving it warmth and character without losing the natural earthy appearance of Kiripaka. It is finished with a tan Roimata-style lashing that suits the understated tones of the stone and complements the overall form.
