Kiripaka Hei Toki Taonga

$220.00

This 55mm Hei Toki is carved from Kiripaka (Silcrete), a stone traditionally used by Māori in Aotearoa for tools and cutting implements before European arrival. The Toki is one of the most recognised and important forms in te ao Māori, symbolising strength, resilience, skill, and leadership. This piece carries soft grey and pale orange tones with strong darker striping through the front, while the back holds a rich burnt orange natural staining from the outside of the original boulder. It is finished with a traditional black lashing that contrasts strongly against the earthy colours of the stone.

Description

This Hei Toki taonga is carved from Kiripaka, also known as Silcrete, a hard stone material that carries a strong connection to the practical and cultural history of Aotearoa. Before European arrival, Māori used many different forms of taonga kōhatu to create tools and implements, with the toki being one of the most important and widely used. Different styles and sizes of toki were shaped for carving, cutting, splitting, hunting, and construction, making them deeply connected to knowledge, craftsmanship, survival, and daily life.

Today, the Toki form continues to symbolise strength, resilience, determination, and capability. It carries the idea of shaping the world around us through effort, skill, and persistence.

This particular taonga is 55mm long with a solid feel and good weight in the hand. The Kiripaka has soft creamy grey colouring with pale orange tones running through it, alongside darker stripes across the front that give the stone strong natural character. On the back, the stone carries a rich burnt orange staining formed naturally on the outside of the original boulder, preserving part of the stone’s natural surface history within the finished piece.

The taonga is finished with a black lashing that gives strong contrast against the lighter earthy tones of the Kiripaka and suits the classic Toki form.
