Description

Whakatau is carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, a stone valued for its deep green colour and steady, grounding qualities. The name Whakatau means to settle, to make a decision, or to bring something to a place of clarity and resolution. It was chosen for this taonga because of the calm, cloud-like patterning across the front of the stone, which gives a sense of things coming together rather than being in conflict.

At 40mm long, this toki is small but purposeful. The toki form is traditionally associated with tools used to shape and build, and as a taonga it symbolises strength, determination, and the ability to shape one’s own path. The cloudy pattern on the front adds depth and movement, drawing the eye inward and reinforcing the idea of reflection and considered action.

Finished with a black lashing, Whakatau has a clean, understated appearance that allows the pounamu itself to remain the focus. It is well suited as an everyday taonga, or as a meaningful gift for someone at a point of decision, change, or settling into a new direction.
