This piece was shaped through tumbling in my workshop, giving the surface a natural texture and strong character, and is finished with a simple black lashing.

Description
Māramatanga is a roimata made from Kahurangi Pounamu, selected for its exceptional translucency. The name Māramatanga translates to clarity, understanding, and illumination, and was chosen because this stone reveals itself fully when held to the light. You can see straight through the Pounamu, creating a sense of openness and honesty that defines this taonga.
Rather than being carved into shape, this piece was formed through tumbling in my workshop. That process has left the surface full of character, with softened edges and subtle texture that speak to the stone’s transformation rather than heavy shaping. The roimata has straight sides and a flat base, creating a long, elongated triangular form that feels intentional and balanced.
The roimata form is traditionally associated with aroha, empathy, and emotional expression. In Māramatanga, those qualities are reinforced by the clarity of the Kahurangi Pounamu itself, making this taonga a symbol of insight, reflection, and clear intent. It is finished with a black lashing that keeps the focus on the stone and its translucency.
