Hei Matau Toroa

$420.00

The hei matau, or fishhook, symbolises prosperity, safe journeys, and connection to the moana. Hei Matau Toroa, named for its form reminiscent of the beak of the toroa (albatross), is an 80mm Pounamu pendant with a tan lashing. Its angled point gives strength to the design, while the stone shifts from soft light greens through to deep rich tones at the base.

Description

The hei matau carries deep significance in Māori culture, symbolising prosperity, abundance, and respect for the ocean. It also represents safe passage over water and the strong connection between people and the moana. A fishhook form worn close becomes both a protector and a reminder of the sustenance and journeys provided by Tangaroa.

Hei Matau Toroa, carved by David Curtis, draws its name from the toroa, or albatross, whose curved beak the bent hook recalls. At 80mm long, this piece carries a distinct angled point at the end of the hook, giving the design both sharpness and flow. The Pounamu itself glows with light green tones at the top, deepening into rich, dark greens toward the base. A tan lashing secures the piece, grounding the taonga with warmth and balance.

This is a hei matau of guardianship and guidance, a taonga that embodies prosperity, safe journeys, and a deep respect for the ocean’s abundance.
