Ngā Wera o te Pounamu
$1,000.00
Whanaunga is a set of two taonga — a Toki and a Roimata — carved from the same piece of deep green serpentine Pounamu from the Nelson area. Each is 60mm long, with a black lashing. Their shared origin symbolises enduring connection — two pieces that were one for countless years, now carrying that bond into the lives of those who wear them.

Description
These two Pounamu taonga were created as part of an exploration into the effects of heat treatment on Pounamu during the Inside Pounamu wānanga at Otago University. Both come from the same slab of South Westland stone — one half left in its natural form, the other carefully heat-treated. The natural piece, finished with a black lashing, keeps its rich green depth and translucency. The heat-treated piece, finished with white lashing, has lightened in tone and carries the memory of the process that changed it.
Together, they form a powerful statement about transformation, connection, and the curiosity that drives both carvers and scientists. This set represents how Pounamu can hold both the strength of the earth and the influence of fire — one born of the river, one reshaped by heat. Their shared origin and contrast make them a reminder that change and continuity can exist side by side, each giving meaning to the other.
