Description
Mangōpare Tuarua means “Two Hammerhead Sharks,” representing two powerful beings joined together in balance. Rather than facing apart, the two mangōpare intertwine to create a harmonious, symmetrical breastplate, making this taonga a meaningful symbol of a strong relationship, shared purpose, and the support found in walking through life together.
Carved by David Curtis, this taonga measures 90 mm wide by 40 mm high and has been carved in detail on both the front and back. Every curve, fin, and contour has been carefully shaped to give the pendant depth and character from every angle, showcasing the many hours of craftsmanship that have gone into creating it.
The mangōpare is widely recognised as a symbol of strength, resilience, determination, leadership, and courage. Bringing two of these powerful forms together adds another layer of meaning, reflecting mutual respect, unity, and the strength that grows when two people support one another while remaining individuals in their own right.
This is a substantial, one-of-a-kind taonga that makes a striking statement while carrying a powerful story of connection, balance, and enduring strength.
