$320.00

Carved from dark grey ōnewa (basalt) sourced from the Banks Peninsula area, this 100mm taonga follows the natural shape of the stone to form a striking mako-inspired design. A pāua eye has been set into the head, with the snout pointing downward and a fin emerging from the side of the piece. The stone has a deep, powerful presence and is suspended on a black cord with a three-hole ringbolt lashing. Basalt was traditionally used by Māori to create tools and weapons due to its strength and fine grain.

Description

Mako Kōhatu is a taonga carved from ōnewa (basalt) from the Banks Peninsula area. The design developed by following the natural shape of the stone as it was carved, eventually revealing a form reminiscent of a mako shark’s head. The snout points downward and a fin emerges from the side, giving the piece a strong, directional presence. A pāua eye has been set into the stone, bringing life and character to the form.

The mako shark carries powerful symbolism across many cultures of the Pacific. It represents strength, determination, and the ability to move decisively through challenges. This taonga reflects those qualities — a reminder to face life with purpose and confidence.

The stone itself is a deep dark grey ōnewa. Basalt like this was widely used by Māori for tools and weapons because of its durability and fine grain, making it both practical and enduring. That connection to traditional materials adds another layer of meaning to the piece.

This taonga measures 100mm long and is finished with a three-hole ringbolt lashing across the top on a black cord. The natural weight and strength of the stone give it a grounding presence when worn.
