Kahurangi Kapeu

This 7cm Kapeu is carved from Kahurangi Pounamu, a stone prized for its vivid clarity and rich green tone. The high translucency of this piece reveals a depth and glow that shifts in the light, showing off the natural beauty of the stone. It hangs from a tan 4-braid cord, simple and strong, complementing the graceful curve of the Kapeu form.

Traditionally worn as an ear ornament by both men and women, the Kapeu was a mark of status and refinement in Māori culture. Its elegant shape and precious material signified mana and leadership, especially among those who spoke with authority. Today, it is often worn as a pendant, close to the heart, carrying with it the same symbolism of dignity and connection.

Some accounts also speak of the Kapeu’s practical use in nurturing, with mothers using the smooth curved form to soothe teething babies. This small gesture adds another layer of meaning, tying the Kapeu to care, comfort, and the bond between mother and child.

This piece holds both history and presence. Carving it was a privilege—working with such beautiful stone, and shaping it into a form that has meant so much to so many for generations.
