Description

This Hei Matau is carved in honour of Tangaroa, atua of the ocean, and the living force of the moana itself. Measuring 70mm wide, the design flows with deliberate movement, the hook shaped to mimic the curve of a hollow wave just before it breaks—a moment where power, beauty, and energy are held in perfect tension.

Carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, the stone features rich, deep green hues with portions of the pale white rind left visible—like foam or sea spray cresting at the edge of a wave. This detail enhances the sense of motion and makes the connection to the ocean even more tangible.

In Te Ao Māori, the Hei Matau represents the provider, safe passage across water, and the deep bond between people and sea. This piece leans into that relationship, seeking not only protection and prosperity, but a direct connection with Tangaroa. The form captures the ocean’s rhythm: a gathering, a release, a cycle of life.

This is a taonga for someone who feels drawn to the sea—whose path is shaped by currents both physical and spiritual. It’s a carving that speaks of movement, purpose, and reverence for the waters that sustain us.
