Description

Whakatipu is a 90mm wide, 55mm high Hei Tiki, carved from Raukaraka Pounamu, an uncommon and striking form of Pounamu with deep golden hues from complete oxidation. The slightly paler head reveals the stone’s original core, highlighting its natural formation.

Hei Tiki are among the most treasured Māori taonga, symbolising whakapapa (genealogy), wisdom, and spiritual connection. Traditionally passed down through generations, they are believed to carry the mana and wairua of those who have worn them before.

This piece is carved in the traditional groove style, a technique seen in early Hei Tiki, giving it a strong connection to history. Raukaraka’s warm, golden tones bring a unique life to this taonga, making it a meaningful piece for those who value Pounamu’s deep cultural significance.
