Whanake – Onwards

This is a stunning piece of pounamu with a heavy kaupapa to go with it. I wouldn’t usually make such a large and heavy toki, but the circumstances were there to justify this one. This is 9cm long and 2.5cm thick!

The pounamu is Marsden Flower Pounamu from the Marsden area on the West coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is hard to come by valued for the beautiful golden ‘flower’ inclusions in it.

The owner of this pendant has been heavily involved in building a global non profit called the Global Forum for Civic Affairs. The weight of this toki it to remind him of the hard yet worthwhile burden of the work. The koru represenst this as well, with the inner korus symbolising the virtues this work is in pursuit of; Peace, justice, and open and fair discourse.

These shots show were we started, with a gorgeous piece of pounamu and a sketch on some paper born from a discussion across the globe.
